Standards Development

Thomas Beale is the principal technical architect of the openEHR specifications, on which he has worked since 2000. Today he co-leads the Specifications Editorial Committee (SEC).

Thomas Beale was a Technical Committee member at IHTSDO (now SNOMED International) 2009-2010 and Implementation and Innovation Committee Member 2011-2012.

Healthcare Provider / Manager

Clients include:

  • Departament de Salut, Catalonia (CatSalut), is a major public health body covering the Catalan region in Spain, with 7.5 million citizens. Ars Semantica has provided strategy consulting on future directions for CatSalut, including platform-based e-health.
  • US Veterans Health Administration (VHA), is the largest integrated health care system in the United States, providing care at 1,255 health care facilities, including 170 VA Medical Centers and 1,074 outpatient sites, to over 9 million Veterans. Ars Semantica has been contracted since early 2018 to provide e-health strategy and technical expertise on a range of issues including standards (including OMG BPM+, HL7 FHIR), computable Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs), and e-health strategy. He has attended HL7 and OMG meetings as an expert VA representative.
  • Intermountain Healthcare, Salt Lake City, US, is a world-class healthcare provider and internationally recognised centre of advanced clinical computing, led by Chief Clinical Quality Officer Dr Brent James and CMIO Dr Stan Huff. Ars Semantica provides architecture and development services to the Activity-Based Design (ABD) project, run by David Edwards, lead architect Alan James since 2016; as well as general review on healthcare IT standards, strategy and tool development, since 2012.

Government

Previous clients have included state and federal government of Australia, the UK NHS, Sweden (SKL), Denmark (Digital Health Board), and Brazil Ministry of Health. Work has generally focussed on developing e-Health strategy on which to based time-planning and budgetting at either state or country levels.
